Nathan Shipley

I am a creative technologist, generative artist, technical director, visual effects supervisor, and motion graphics artist. Currently exploring AI for VFX, animation, and film.

I am a technical director at BUCK and was previously a resident at Stochastic Labs in Berkeley and the Director of AI at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco.

I am fascinated with the use of emerging technologies as tools to create impossible images; technical processes and unintended software combinations to solve complicated visual problems.

I work in ComfyUI, Automatic1111, Nuke, Maya, Cinema4D, After Effects, and Unity. I write code in Python, C# and Javascript. I love 3D animation, fluid simulations, and data visualization. I can direct, VFX supe, and supervise post.

My journey into the use of AI for image making began in 2017 with a deepfake project for the Salvador Dali Museum and continued with the GANocracy conference at MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab. From there I have explored the use of GANs and diffusion to create generative imagery and transform portraits.

My work is part of the permanent collection at The Dali and has been featured in national broadcast spots, interactive campaigns and Super Bowl spots.

I have been an invited speaker at the Mathematics Sciences Research Institute, the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council, and the University of Mississippi.

After spending a year traveling around the world, I was based in the Bay Area from 2009 until 2020. Now I work remotely and live with my family and a large collection of optics, GPUs, and plants.
